Reopening Jamestown Schools Fall 2020

August 31, 2020

Dear Jamestown School Community,

Reopening our schools is a community-wide effort that impacts all of us. I want to start by saying thank you for your continued support, patience, and feedback throughout our planning process. Our community has been incredibly kind and appreciative through all the challenges we have encountered since March. For this, I am incredibly appreciative and thankful for the opportunity that I have to serve the Jamestown community.

Returning to school in-person will take all of us working together, staying positive, and following health and safety guidelines, including wearing masks, physical distancing, and frequent hand washing. Throughout our planning, the health and safety of our staff and students have been our top priority. Our Reopening Schools Advisory Committee consisted of 50 members from our community - parents, teachers, staff, administration, and school committee. Each of these committee members also offered their own personal and professional experiences to assist in creating the most comprehensive plan possible. We benefited from the opinions and suggestions of medical providers, members of the military, educators from other communities, and individuals who written reopening plans for their own place of employment. We listened to the many concerns shared by our families during our virtual parent forums. Our staff shared their concerns, ideas, and suggestions to aid in creating viable and flexible plans to provide a high-quality education.

Key areas of focus in the planning process included:

  • Health and Safety

  • Instruction for all students

  • Social-Emotional and Mental Health Support

  • Reopening Operations

  • Communication

The Rhode Island Department of Education required school districts to submit plans to them for feedback by July 17th. We received our feedback this week. Below is what RIDE provided as feedback to our plans.

  • Jamestown’s plan focuses deeply on a clear classroom design plan to ensure proper social distancing and health/safety protocols are followed.

  • Jamestown has a strong distance learning plan that essentially results in all lessons being easily adaptable for in-person and distance learning, enabling Jamestown to maintain consistent, rigorous instruction throughout the year.

  • Jamestown has a strong approach for developing relationships with students and families. This includes reaching out to families before school starts, and multiple ongoing measures of virtual engagement with students throughout the year.

By now our families have selected the preferred school scenario model for their child. Our team of administrators, custodial staff, support staff, & teachers have been working diligently to prepare our buildings and instruction for the opening of schools on September 14th. If you have not watched any of our virtual forums please take some time now to watch the recordings below.

I want to close, by sharing my excitement in welcoming students, staff, and families back to school after a very long stretch of being away from our school buildings. After an eventful transition to distance learning, new practices for education, and creating new ways to enjoy summer we are finally returning back together once again! Please be on the lookout for a Welcome Back to School zoom meeting for all parents and staff that I will co-host with our administrators in early September.

Please reach out to me at any time with any questions or concerns you may have. We will keep you informed of any changes and important information that will impact you, your child, and your family.
