The Jamestown School Department, with the support of the Jamestown community, provides a learning environment that instills confidence, inspires enthusiasm for lifelong learning, and provides children with the skills and knowledge necessary to become engaged and productive citizens.
Message from the Superintendent
Happy New Year!
The start of every new year reminds me how quickly time passes and how important every moment of learning is for our students. The new year is also a perfect time to restate Jamestown School Department’s commitment to providing an education that allows children time to learn, explore, think, collaborate, question, and practice all that creates and promotes a rich school experience and a love of learning. With that in mind, some of you may know that in September, we opened up a makerspace classroom in Melrose School. This environment allows students time to apply classroom learning as they create and build projects utilizing different types of technology. Recently, first graders applied physical science concepts. Watch the video at the end of my message to hear what some of them have to say.
We hope to create a similar space at Lawn School in the 2016-17 school year. Lawn has a rich history of robotics. The work of students and coaches produced award winning teams throughout the years, and we would like to expand that experience for even more students in grades 5-8, as we strengthen our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) program.
Our Report Card Parent Focus Committee will be meeting sometime at the end of February to give us feedback on the newly designed report card. Please help us collect data by responding to this short survey on the report card. Click on link....http://goo.gl/forms/rhxhGJU9KA.
PARCC will be administered beginning at the end of March. There is only one testing session this year. It runs from March 28th through May 15th. The Jamestown assessment schedule can be found on Page 5 of the Warrior. Please be on the lookout for more communication about PARCC from the principals at Melrose and Lawn in the coming weeks. Some parents have asked what we do with the data we receive from these assessments. Once we received the the 2015 PARCC assessment, the data was analyzed at the district, school, and classroom levels. We then use that data, along with other information to make any changes or adjustments to improve achievement for all of our students. Assessment is an important element of instruction. The PARCC data is one important piece of the assessment system that informs us of student progress.
If you would like to nominate one of the many deserving Jamestown teachers for a NBC10 ( Hasbro Partner) Golden Apple Award, please read the following information from NBC10:
One of the ways in which we recognize some of the great educators in our schools is through the weekly presentation of Golden Apple awards. Our partners in the Golden Apple initiative are NBC10 and Hasbro, and we truly appreciate their support for Rhode Island teachers.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Golden Apple awards, check out the latest NBC10 feature: our awards presentation to Joanne Phillips, a science teacher at Lincoln High School:
