Our Mission

The Jamestown School Department, with the support of the Jamestown community, provides a learning environment that instills confidence, inspires enthusiasm for lifelong learning, and provides children with the skills and knowledge necessary to become engaged and productive citizens.

It is an honor and privilege to serve the Jamestown community as your Interim Superintendent. As you know, Jamestown Public Schools has very high levels of student achievement and continuous positive community support. This is certainly a reflection of a highly dedicated and talented staff who bring skill and enthusiasm to their work each day. During this transitional period, ensuring that each student reaches their maximum potential will continue to be our highest priority.  Thank you in advance for supporting education and the Jamestown community!

Congratulations to Carol Blanchette, our former Superintendent, who has taken a position with the RI Department of Education as Chief of Teaching and Learning.

We’re ready to welcome the children of Jamestown back to school!  It’s been a beautiful summer, and I hope that you spent time with family and friends, relaxed, and had some fun!

As always, the custodial and maintenance staff, under the direction of Building and Grounds Director, Lew Kitts, has done a superb job of cleaning and preparing the physical plant for students and teachers.  Lew has worked for more than twenty five years in Jamestown as the caretaker of our schools and grounds.  During that time he has ensured that student safety always came first and that the needs of the community were met through thoughtful planning and vision.  No matter what the situation, Lew could always be relied upon to offer sage advice and direction.  After a long and successful career, Lew is retiring as the building and grounds director.  On a personal note, I will particularly miss his guidance in making the all important  “No School in Jamestown”  calls in the winter :) .  As Lew is such an involved community member it is likely you will see him in town, and if you do, please take the opportunity to thank him for his years of service.  He will be greatly missed by all of us.

The District Strategic Plan continues to steer our work.   Below, I’ve highlighted just some of the actions we will take this year to support the plan:

  • The World Language Committee will produce and present a plan to expand world language beginning in the elementary school to the school committee for approval;
  • Students in grades three through six now have Chromebooks as we continue to rollout the 1:1 plan and leverage technology to support personalized learning;
  • A new Social Studies curriculum will be completed this year for school committee approval; and,
  • The staff will continue to learn about and provide personalized learning pathways for each and every child in an environment where students are challenged and encouraged to think and explore.

Makerspace continues to grow as an important part of our school culture and programming.  This year, Lawn will offer a newly designed library/media space to students for the purpose of engaging in design thinking and application of standards.  It is an exciting opportunity for students to collaborate and problem-solve.   Makerspace provides an important aspect of learning and we are proud to be among some of the first schools in RI to begin this program.  We invite you to visit either Melrose or Lawn Schools to take a look.

PARCC assessment results were made public on August 25th, and Jamestown students performed well.  Both schools made excellent gains in English Language Arts and Math.  The report reflecting the results is posted on our website.  I will be doing a more in-depth analysis and report for the school committee in October.  Allow me to thank you for supporting the teaching and learning in Jamestown.  We can’t do it without you!

We are always looking for substitute teachers, teaching assistants, custodians and bus monitors.  If you have any interest in any of those positions, please call my office and speak to Janette Warner who will walk you through the entire hiring process.

Welcome back to what I know will be a great school year.  It is my honor to serve as superintendent and if I can be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to call or contact me.
